On March
16, 2007, ten individuals from Beacon Heights Church of the Brethren
participated in the Christian
Peace Witness for Iraq in Washington, DC. The Beacon
Heights delegation was also joined by a member of Fort Wayne Friends
Meeting.
This important ecumenical event was one of the largest Christian
anti-war events in several decades, with an estimated 5,000 participants
from across the country. The project was sponsored by 36 diverse
Christian organizations and denominations, including Brethren
Witness and On Earth Peace. A two-hour worship service was held at the National
Cathedral followed by a four-mile candlelight procession to the White
House.
In addition to participating in the Christian Peace Witness for Iraq,
the Beacon Heights group also met with the Legislative Assistant
for Military Affairs for Senator Richard Lugar, the ranking minority
member on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Issues addressed
included a call to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the need
for dialogue with Iran, the use of depleted uranium weapons and landmines
and veterans' affairs. A copy of "Church
of the Brethren General Board Resolution: An End to the War in Iraq" was provided to
the Senator's office.
